Chris Bennett Haulage FAQs
At Chris Bennett Heavy Haulage we are often asked about what we do and about the many different kinds of haulage services and vehicles.
We have put together some of the most frequently asked questions below, to give you a handy guide to the queries we receive most often.
What is haulage?
Haulage is simply the transport of goods from one place to another. This can be via any mode of transport. Air freight, rail cargo and sea transport are all methods of haulage. However, in most cases some or all of the journey will take place by road, unless the final destination is a port, airport or railway station.
What is a haulage company?
A haulage company provides haulage services, usually using a fleet of company-owned or driver-owned haulage vehicles. Haulage companies may also offer related services, such as liaising with police and local authorities to arrange road closures or rolling roadblocks along routes used in abnormal load haulage (e.g. wide loads).
How much do haulage companies charge per mile?
There’s no ‘per mile’ price for haulage services across the board. Instead, the cost will depend on a number of variables including the type and quantity of goods being shipped, the route and destination, and associated services such as escort vehicles for wide loads.
When you make an enquiry with Chris Bennett Heavy Haulage, we will give you a price quote based on all of the relevant variables, the number of vehicles and personnel needed, and so on.
Do DVSA have a right to check haulage companies' inspections?
The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) may request to inspect haulage companies’ records, including tachograph data, planned maintenance, and identification and repair of vehicle defects. This may be due to an incident on the road, a poor MOT record, or any other cause for concern that the DVSA has become aware of.
What is the difference between a freight forwarder and haulier?
In general, a haulier physically transports goods from one place to another, while a freight forwarder is more of a booking service. Some freight forwarders will outsource to a third-party haulage company, while some hauliers also act as their own freight forwarder.
What are haulage vehicles?
Haulage vehicles include any vehicle used to transport goods or cargo. Examples range from HGVs and low-loaders, to car transporters, articulated flatbeds and beavertails, as well as any escort vehicles that accompany them.
Heavy haulage vehicles often have built-in lifting and loading equipment, making it easier to load very heavy items into the trailer. HGVs and Tautliners are typically fitted with side curtains, which help to protect shipments against the elements and hide valuable goods from prying eyes.
How many types of haulage are there?
There are many types of haulage. Some common examples include heavy haulage, plant haulage and vehicle transport, as well as parcel/post delivery, waste removal, and variations like hazardous goods haulage and wide/abnormal loads.
Chris Bennett Heavy Haulage have a diverse fleet of haulage vehicles suitable for a wide range of different haulage types, and can offer the services you need to plan your route and arrange any required road closures or special permissions along the way.
