A low loader is a semi-trailer with 2 drops in deck height: one right after the curved supporting pipe and one right before the wheels. This permits the deck to be very low compared with alternative trailers. It offers the ability to carry higher loads, which alternative trailers cannot. Low loaders are used to haul heavy plant and equipment such as bulldozers, industrial equipment etc.
The first low loader trailer was invented in the 1920s; it featured a riveted curved shape and solid rubber tyres. The first detachable gooseneck trailer, referred to as an RGN (Removable gooseneck), was created in 1958.
There are several types of low loader vehicles, including:
- Fixed Gooseneck
- Fixed-neck
- Hydraulic detachable gooseneck
- Mechanically-detachable gooseneck
- Mechanical folding gooseneck
